Whether or not you already have solar panels, you can reduce your effect on the environment (as well as your electricity bills) by effectively controlling your usage of electricity and gas. Many people are unaware of just how much energy (and money) they are wasting. Every time you leave a lamp or a TV switched on when there is nobody in the room, you are wasting energy, increasing your bills and creating a greenhouse effect. Here are some tips that can help you save energy:

  • Heating and cooling are two of the biggest energy wasters in the house – be conscious of your usage of air conditioning or heating when you are not home.

  • Don’t use your stove for every meal if you have a toaster, pressure cooker or kettle. These small appliances are designed for preparing small quantities of food in a short period of time.   • If you use stationary heaters, don’t put them behind pieces of furniture, as this will block the heat and make them less effective and possibly dangerous.
  • Your washing machine will use almost as half as much energy if you wash with cold water rather than hot water. Eighty percent of the energy used by a washing machine goes for heating the water. Also, avoid use your washing machine until you have a full load ready to be washed.
